I found this rather large Ceanothus Silkmoth dangling under the eaves of my back porch this morning. It tried to fly but clumsily tumbled to the deck. Afraid my dogs would step on it on their way outside I took a postcard and let it crawl onto it and brought it to the safety of the top of the deck railing, where I could see its wings vibrating like it had only recently emerged from its cocoon.
It stayed perched on the railing for a few minutes, allowing me a few macro shots before it suddenly took to the air and spiraled upward to the tops of the tall cedar trees in my backyard. I’ve only seen one other before, but in caterpillar form. It had been accidentally injured when we were cleaning leaves off the driveway, and we were unable to save it. I’m glad this time I was able to help one of them. A good omen, perhaps. 🙂
